Uxmal Due, perhaps, to better administration of economic resources, Uxmal reached a position of domination over the other population centers, becoming a political and administrative nucleus which governed the entire territory. The archeological zone is known as the "thrice built" because of the separate construction periods that have been identified and which exemplify the different cultural influences in the region. This mixture of diverse styles has made it possible to establish the chronology at the site. The architectural and decorative beauty of the buildings set around courtyards or quadrangles is based on a marked horizontality, exquisite friezes and facades made of thousands of tiny stones perfectly polished and adjusted to create geometric mosaics, which are unequalled in their perfection throughout the Maya region. Outstanding among the structures are the truncated pyramids and the "chultunes", or dug out, semispherical deposits finished off so as to store rainwater. The main buildings at the site are: the pyramid of the Magician, the Governor's Palace, the Temple of the Turtles, the Nunnery Quadrangle, the Temple of the Phalli and the House of Pigeons. Besides being one of the most beautiful archeological sites in the Maya world, it is the most profusely decorated and therefore compared with some constructions from the Greek and Roman cultures. |
