Tuxtla Gutierrez

The City of Tuxtla Gutierrez is the current capital of the State of Chiapas, which has grown as a modern city and at the same time has kept the traditional flavor of its people. It has first world class services: educational, financial and cultural, as well as in the mass media and infrastructure.

It is a dynamic city, as witnessed by its streets, plazas, shadowed by bunches of trees, as well as the beautiful buildings, some of them modern, such as the Convention Center of Chiapas, Emilio Rabasa Theater or the Regional Museum of Chiapas, which witness the tenacity towards the State growth.

In the Faustino Miranda Botanical Garden you can walk throughout wide green areas, where you will get in touch to the wonderful tropical flora from the State of Chiapas, as well as other species from other areas of the country. However, if you want to get in touch with its great diversity of fauna, you can go to the Miguel Alvarez Bravo zoo, the only one of its kind in Latin America.

As far as food, in the City of Tuxtla Gutierrez there are excellent places to taste regional, Mexican and international cuisine. One of the most representative ones is Las Pichancas restaurant, which offers pozol (corn drink), tasajo with chirmol (salted beef with condiments), or delicious tamales. You can also watch a regional dances show in an authentic Chiapas style.

This city has its origin in the Zoque indigenous community called Coyatoc (Rabbits' House), which flourished during Colonial times due to its trade activity. In 1892, Governor Emilio Rabasa designated Tuxtla Gutierrez the Capital of the State.
